G.I. Joe was a toy line long before it was a comic book. Originally a
series of stuffed dolls, Hasbro began producing small plastic figurines in the early 1980s.
Following these eras is a list of other sites of interest. |

Marvel Comics began publishing comics based on G.I. Joe in 1982. Written
by Larry Hama, the series sold well. It eventually lasted over a hundred and fifty issues, receiving a fairly short-lived
spin-off series. The title went through several transitions along the way but was always written
by Larry Hama. Certain periods were better, and more mature, than others, but the whole was a
memorable, though uneven, epic.
More to come.

In 2001, in response to the resurge in the popularity of G.I. Joe,
particularly of Larry Hama's run on the Marvel comic and the toys from the first half or so of
those years, Devil's Due (publishing under the Image Comics umbrella) launched a new, bimonthly
series that returned those classic characters to action. Though reviews were mixed, sales were
very good: the first issue went to a second printing almost immediately, and the second issue
was rushed to press earlier to take advantage of the success. A collection of the first two
issues was published shortly after the third issue, and the extra-sized fourth issue saw not
only the conclusion of the first storyline, but the title switching to monthly publication and
the launch of Battle Files, a mini-series spin-off.
In October 2002, a second monthly ongoing series subtitled Frontline
was launched. The same month saw the eleventh issue of the main title. It was the first time
the G.I. Joe franchise had been running two monthly ongoing series since Special Missions
went monthly with the September 1988 issue, over 14 years before.
