The six-issue mini-series League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was
actually the first publication of
America's Best Comics.
Featuring scripts by
Alan Moore and art by Kevil O'Neill, the
mini-series saw the gathering of various characters from Victorian pulp fiction in an England
half historic and half transformed by fictional technology.![]() League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #5 was delayed because this ad, which has become known as the "Marvel Vagina," was included among its faux-Victorian advertisements. While "marvel" was hardly unknown to Victorian advertisements, the ad clearly represented fun at the expense of Marvel Comics, and DC wanted it removed. Apparently, editors hadn't read the many phony advertisements too closely, as the "Marvel Vagina" made it through the editorial process and was only caught after the issue went to press. The entire run was pulped and reprinted without this ad. A brilliant work, the mini-series won awards and lavish critical acclaim.
It was, however, plagued by excessive lateness. To avoid having this same situation develop for
the sequel, DC Comics insisted upon having the majority of the second mini-series complete prior
to its launch. This greatly delayed that launch, eventually pushing it to July 2002, but the
issues would be no more regular than the first mini-series, with the first half of the
mini-series arriving regularly and the second half trickling in. A movie adaptation of the original mini-series, starring Sean Connery, was
released in the summer of 2003. It alters substantially the line-up of the League and gave them
a Victorian automobile.
