In 2002, DC's Vertigo imprint launched a new ongoing comic book, entitled
Y: The Last Man and written by Brian K. Vaughan, late of the failed
Swamp Thing relaunch.
The premise of the series -- that all male animals on the planet were killed save Yorick Brown,
accompanied by his (get this!) pet chimp -- and the poor reviews that Vaughan had received for
his Swamp Thing work spelled disaster for the series. Yet, shockingly, the series would
garner an astounding amount of critical acclaim. Many proclaimed Vaughan the next big writer
to come out of Vertigo, known as a training ground for many of the best writers of the (almost)
decade prior. Although the series sold at Vertigo levels, generally on the low end of the
spectrum of mainstream comic book sales, DC could not keep up with demands for reprints of the
sold-out early issues. Combined with Vertigo's ongoing
Fables, launched two months earlier, some
were proclaiming a new, albeit somewhat muted, Vertigo renaissance.
