Scattered Series (1986-1992)
Aquaman logo In 1986, DC revived Aquaman in a four-issue mini-series that replaced his old, ugly costume with a streamlined blue one -- a move one might have expected to have come during the Silver Age, in which both Flash and Green Lantern were given new streamlined costumes with a single dominant color. Although the mini-series is fondly remembered, it failed to spawn additional Aquaman material -- and was later wiped from continuity. Aquaman reappeared in 1988 in a disappointing and confusing special that would literally be forgotten in the official summary of Aquaman's appearances the following year.
1989 saw the Legend of Aquaman Special, retelling Aquaman's origin in revised form. It was apparently originally intended to run in Secret Origins and was intended as the prelude to the new five-issue Aquaman mini-series, offered later that year. Both the special and the mini-series featured writing by Keith Giffen and Robert Loren Fleming, with comics legend Curt Swan offering brilliant pencils over Giffen's breakdowns. Despite the talent assigned to the project, it failed to spawn an Aquaman ongoing. Nonetheless, Legend of Aquaman Special would have a lasting effect on Aquaman's origin: Peter David would make his Atlantis Chronicles accord to the revised origin offered in Legend of Aquaman Special. While the seven-issue mini-series Atlantis Chronicles was published in 1990, it will be discussed as part of the following era.
Late 1991 saw the launch of the second ongoing Aquaman series (and the fourth series to bear that title). Written by Shaun McLaughlin, it lasted thirteen issues. While sales were adequate, DC felt that it would be better to cancel the series so as to relaunch the property with a new mini-series in 1993-1994.
