Post-David Era (1998-2000)
Aquaman logo Erik Larsen took over Aquaman's fifth series with #50, accompanied by considerable fanfare. Larsen's characteristic take was unappologetically campy: one of his first moves was to remake Charybdis (who had taken Aquaman's hand during Peter David's run) into Piranha-Man, intended to be a new arch-foe. If the name Piranha-Man seemed stupid, we might speculate that Larsen would respond that it was no more stupid than super-heroes themselves, which we should enjoy reading without over-concern for "realism." Readers did not agree, however, and Larsen's run proved to be a debacle and sales quickly plummetted. The art, largely by Eric Battle, was detested by Aquaman fans. Larsen, overcommitted, had to bring in help as writer -- then DC brought in a third writer and demoted Larsen to the status of secondary co-writer. The Larsen era would last a mere thirteen issues and a special.
Needing to get the title back on track, DC had Dan Jurgens succeed Larsen, accompanied by William Kaluta on covers. Despite being liked by Aquaman fans much more than Larsen, the damage had been done and the title was cancelled -- in late 2000, with #75 -- after a year of Jurgens stories.
While this Aquaman series ended in failure, and its waning years are not well-remembered, it is worth noting that this series exceeded -- in number of issues -- the first -- and formerly the longest -- series.
