Peter David Era (1990, 1993-1998)
Aquaman logo While the third Aquaman ongoing (the fifth series with that title) did not begin until 1994, Peter David's run on the character began with the 1990 seven-issue mini-series The Atlantis Chronicles. Remembered fondly by Aquaman fans, the series provided a substantial history for Atlantis for the first time, running from just before Poseidonis sunk to Aquaman's birth. The second Aquaman mini-series, running from 1991 to 1992, followed The Atlantis Chronicles but was cancelled, paving the way for David to continue his work on the character. He did this with the four-issue mini-series Aquaman: Time and Tide, which told of Aquaman's emergence as a public hero and some of his early adventures.
The ongoing Aquaman title, written by David, debuted in 1994 and quickly changed the character: Aquaman lost a hand, ironically due to piranhas. He replaced it with a hook that would later be enhanced technologically. David would also suggest that Aquaman was a water elemental, a theme originated in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and had susequently been used in John Ostrander's Firestorm.
This ongoing, as the crux of Peter David's run, is remembered by many as the heyday of the character. That said, it suffered from shifting artistic teams and a decline in the scripts: David began the series with a body of stories he had wanted to tell for some time, but wound down as the series progressed.
In 1996, DC gave Phil Jimenez a four-issue mini-series starring Aqualad, now renamed Tempest. The series, featuring Jimenez's always beautiful artwork, gave Garth additional power, a new costume as well as a new name, and a new magical origin that paid homage to the past as well as to the magic David had introduced in The Atlantis Chronicles.
David's run would conclude when he was hurredly removed, forcing him to compress several issues' worth of story into his final issue, #46, which ended with a cliffhanger. Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning were brought in to continue the cliffhanger and carry the series through #49, as well as the crossover issue numbered #1,000,000. Erik Larsen, co-founder of Image Comics and creator of The Savage Dragon, was brought in to helm the title beginning with #50.
