In the aftermath of The Authority's troubles, controversies, and
ultimate cancellation, Wildstorm relaunched Stormwatch as part of its "Eye of the Storm"
line of mature readers books. This new Stormwatch was a team of non-powered military operatives
prepared to take down super-powered characters who, like The Authority, had gotten out of hand. Writer Micah Ian Wright, in a promotional interview, described the series as an
attempt to respond in a realistic way to what a governmental response would be to superpowered beings. Faced with beings of absolute power willing to impose their Authority upon us, what do the freely elected democracies of the world have to do to protect themselves from becoming enslaved by these godlike people?Wright went further, responding more directly to the implications of The Authority, a group of superhumans who feel that they know what's best for the rest of us and who are willing to kill us to see their will carried out. There's a word for that: fascism. The new Stormwatch team is made up of human soldiers whose task is to keep tabs on the Wildstorm Universe's rapidly expanding roster of superhumans and police them. It's everyman vs. the uberman. |
