In 1998, it had been over a year and a half since Batman's last unified,
event-driven storyline. Sales had dipped, and the franchise needed reinvigoration. As with
the last such storyline -- "Contagion" (and its sequel, "Legacy") -- this new storyline would
see a massive threat upon Gotham that created widespread chaos. With "Cataclysm," however,
that disaster would be natural: an earthquake.
