Batman #608, published in just the third month after the conclusion
of the Bruce Wayne: Fugitive storyline, featured the debut of a new creative team, with
Jim Lee on pencils and Jeph Loeb on scripts. A heavy promotional campaign was launched, but no
one could predict the level of success that would be achieved. That first issue sold out almost
immediately, as did reprints, as did subsequent issues. The new creative team made a Batman
title the top-selling title in the United States for the first time in a decade. Jim Lee had sold his Wildstorm Studios to DC Comics not only for a ton of
money but for the opportunity to work again as an artist, including work for mainstream DC
Comics. But he had acquired a reputation for slowness. When he agreed to be a part of the new
creative team on Batman, with Jeph Loeb writing, several issues had to be completed before
DC would solicit them and a bet was made with Jim Lee against his completing his work on time.
Jim Lee won that bet, and his year-long contract was extended before the first six issues were
published for another six months, also to be written by Jeph Loeb. |
