The Golden Age (1939-1964)
Because of the strong success in 1938 of Superman, DC wanted another costumed hero. Bob Kane -- who turned 22 in May 1939 -- came up with the Batman.
Kane would later claim that he was influenced by the play The Bat (by Mary Roberts Rinehart and in which the title character was actually a villain) as well as Leonardo da Vinci's studies of bats. The most obvious influence, however, was the pulps popular in the 1930s and filled with costumed vigilantes, from the Shadow to the Gray Seal (who was also a bored millionaire type). Zorro and the Lone Wolf appeared in films, The Green Hornet on radio, and The Phantom in the newspaper comic strips. (Of course, this line of vigilantes without super-powers descended from heroes such as the Lone Ranger -- whose family had also been murdered --, Sherlock Holmes, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and even Robin Hood.)
Writer Bill Finger, about a year younger than Kane, added a wings-like cape and pointed ears to the character's costume. Using The Shadow as his closest model, he plotted the first episode of Batman, which would appear in 1939's Detective Comics #27. Detective Comics had previously featured various detective and vigilante characters, and would continue to do so after Batman's debut -- although the Batman feature would never miss an issue.
Police Commissioner Gordon and the contrast between the priviledged life of Bruce Wayne and his violent life as Batman would be present from his first appearance. Almost as quickly, Batman began using gadgets -- logical given his abundance of funding, though it would take some time for these gadgets to acquire their now-familiar nomenclature. Batman stories came to thrive on a combination of the bizarre and the realistic: his Gotham City, gadgets, and outrageous adventures added an element of the exotic to the hard-edged, generally realistic tone of his stories. Batman's villians tended toward the realistic side at first -- even when they had fantastical or supernatural elements -- but increasingly added an odd overlay, like the villains of Dick Tracy except more brutal.
In an era in which boy sidekicks were deemed necessary for the identification of young readers, giving them a voice in the stories, Robin debuted rather quickly, making his first appearance in 1940's Detective Comics #38 -- after Batman had received just eleven brief solo stories. Robin, the Boy Wonder -- hailed on the cover of Detective Comics #38 as "the find of 1940" -- also allowed Batman to reveal his plans in word balloons rather than the writer revealing those plans through captions. He would become known as the prototypical boy sidekick.
Batman's popularity led DC to give him his own quarterly series -- titled simply Batman -- in 1940. The first issue of that series debuted the Joker and the character who would come to be known as Catwoman. The Penguin first appeared in Detective Comics #58 in late 1941. In 1942, Batman shifted to bimonthly. Two-Face first appeared in Detective Comics #66 in mid-1942. In 1954, Batman shifted from six to eight issues per year.
Batman was hit hard by American McCarthy-era Puritanism. By the middle of the 1950s, the dark knight of earlier years had shed his grimness for camp. His villains in this period were often aliens and often non-violent fun-seekers (a far cry from the deadly killers of his earliest days). The colors in this period were light and bright, while Batman and Robin did most of their work by daylight. It is believed that sales of the Batman titles fell during this period, when super-hero comics in general did not sell nearly as well as their heyday during World War II.
Detective Comics #255 (cover-dated November 1955) featured a back-up story that introduced the character Martian Manhunter. A Martian with super-strength who could change his shape at will, Martian Manhunter was essentially a twist on the Superman archetype, coming from another planet but looking quite differently from humans. Operating in secret and hiding his powerful and alien nature, he assumed the human identity of John Jones. This fit nicely into the popular trend in science fiction of the time, which often had threatening aliens hiding as humans: 1956's Invasion of the Body Snatchers is but one example. That fictional trend, in turn, fit into the McCarthy era fear of Communists, who Americans had to be conditioned to see as threatening and sinister despite that they appeared outwardly normal (or even friendly). Martian Manhunter, however, twisted this cliché: he was a hero and not a villain despite appearances to the contrary (and here we might remember that Superman had originally been conceived as a villain). Arguably, Martian Manhunter was the first new Silver Age super-hero (though some have suggested alternatives, such as Captain Comet).
