Knightfall (1993-1994)
In the end of 1992 and early 1993, DC began laying the groundwork for a monumental storyline that would not only change the direction of the Batman character but change the character himself. This was conceived as an event, originally suggested by a fan: why not put someone else behind Batman's cowl? As with the death of Superman in late 1992, a new villain was created to engineer Batman's downfall: Bane -- introduced in his own special, Batman: Vengeance of Bane. Rather than replacing Batman with an established character (such as Nightwing), a new character was created: Azrael -- introduced in his own mini-series, Batman: Sword of Azrael. The importance of these introductions would be left secret, causing these issues to attain sky high prices just months after publication.
"Knightfall" would begin with the radical step of Bane demolishing Arkham Asylum, freeing all of its inmates. The storyline would feature covers with a logo like a moon that slowly closed over story's course (much like the clock hands in Watchmen). The storyline would also be supported by brilliant house ads for almost every issue. Over the first half of the story, Batman struggled to capture as many escaped inmates as he could, typically ignoring his accumulated injuries as the former inmates ran murderously rampant. At last, Bane -- pumped up on the drug venom -- battled Batman, defeating him utterly and finally delivering the coup de grace: the breaking of Batman's back. The second half of the story had Bruce Wayne recovering and Azrael assuming the mantle of Batman to stop the former inmates and maintain Batman's presence. The storyline concluded with Azrael-Batman defeating Bane, Bruce Wayne having left Gotham in search of his lover and the father of Robin. Sales spiked through the roof.
"Knightquest," the storyline that followed, focused on Azrael-Batman's war on crime in Gotham in Bruce Wayne's absence. Azrael-Batman he had no need for Robin and locked the boy out of the Batcave; Jim Gordon, who could tell that Batman had become someone else, reevaluated his one-sided relationship with the vigilante. A harsher Batman, Azrael-Batman slowly modified his costume over the course of his reign and eventually allowed the serial killer Abattoir to fall to his death -- and with this act, a line was crossed. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne continued and finally succeeded in his search, had his back healed through a super power, and returned to Gotham, where he heard of Azrael-Batman's apparent insanity and vowed to reclaim his mantle. All the while, Robin and Catwoman had adventures of their own-- both granted ongoing series as "Knightfall" concluded, expanding the number of ongoing Batman books from four to six.
By the time of "KnightsEnd," which sought to conclude the long storyline, complaints had mounted about the story's course. Few cared for Azrael-Batman or prefered him, and some complained that Nightwing had not naturally succeeded Batman. The apparent slighting of Nightwing was enhanced by giving his successor as Robin as well as Catwoman their own title, an honor Nightwing had not received. Of course, Azrael-Batman's unlikeability helped the plan to lead the story towards the deposition of this new and more extreme if not outright mad Batman -- but this came at the cost of readers' identification with the titles' protagonist. Moreover, whereas "Knightfall" had seen the various titles interacting tightly in a single dramatic arc, "Knightquest" freed those titles -- now expanded in number -- to tell various stories connected by looser notions of the story's forward momentum. That "Knightquest" was more lengthy did not help. And, as time passed, the event-driven nature of the story seemed all the more apparent.
Nonetheless, "KnightsEnd" saw an unexpected rise in sales and attention. This was partly due to its quick pace: the whole storyline would be published over two months, made possible without significant truncating by including Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and the two new titles (Catwoman and Robin), as well as by making the first three chapters extra long. One reason for this rapidity was that the month following "KnightsEnd" would have to see the Bat-titles participate in DC's month-long Zero Hour crossover event. In any case, "KnightsEnd" saw Bruce Wayne retrain himself following his recovery and, along with the entire Batman family, dramatically battle Azrael for the title of Batman. Wayne won, and Azrael quickly disappeared.
Published during "KnightsEnd" were two crossovers with Marvel's Punisher, one published by DC and the other by Marvel. Whereas the DC version featured Azrael-Batman, Marvel's version took place after Bruce Wayne had recovered the title. Marvel's refered to the chronologically earlier DC version, and provided a memorable test of Batman's character in implicit contrast with Azrael-Batman as well as with the Punisher: Batman saves the Joker, who the Punisher would otherwise kill.
In the month following Zero Hour, all DC titles received issues numbered zero. Questioning whether Joe Chill, long the murderer of Batman's parents, had really committed the crime -- and still recovering from the events of "Knightfall" -- Bruce Wayne turned the title of Batman over to Dick Grayson, the first Robin who had become Nightwing. The three-month "Pridigal" storyline was thus a correction of sorts for not having done so instead of letting Azrael become Batman. While the storyline meant that Bruce Wayne had only returned as Batman for two abnormal months, watching Dick Grayson as Batman had a quieter, perhaps less dramatic but more emotionally resonant tone than Azrael's adventures under the cowl. The storyline concluded with a recuperated Bruce Wayne amicably resuming the title of Batman.
With this, the era begun with laying the groundwork for "Knightfall" had run its course. There is, however, one addendum. A few months later, DC offered a prestige format special entitled Batman: Mitefall that humorously told how Batmite -- introduced into post-Crisis continuity a few years prior -- experienced his own version of the storyline's events. The special brought the saga full circle, already so iconic as to become the subject of parody.
In retrospect, the era of "Knightfall" and its follow-ups stand for history as one of the classics of the event-driven extended storylines that became popular at the time: besides the death of Superman and his subsequent temporary replacement by four derrivative heroes, Green Lantern Hal Jordan had gone mad and been replaced, Wonder Woman had been temporarily replaced, and Flash was being redefined in a storyline that played with the idea of replacing that hero as well; Marvel had likewise adopted event-driven extended storylines for many of its characters. While Batman's version would remain open to criticism of being an event, implying lack of concern for content, the content of "Knightfall," "Knightquest," and "KnightsEnd" was actually rather high. One can hardly degrade the story's drama, nor the fact that it was intelligent without being remarkably so. But the storyline was, above all else, a family drama -- a tale of warring psyches and notions, however superficially so. As an event, however, it would pave the way for a series of less successful event-driven Batman storylines to come.
