"Newer Look" Era (1995)
In the wake the two years or so of "Knightfall" and its implications, which had seen unprececented interrelating of the various Batman books, DC felt it was time for a breather: the Batman books would once again separated and allowed to run their own course -- for at least a year, DC announced.
But first, they would be conbined for a single month, a month that introduced the first change in Batman's costume since his "new look" appeared in 1964. This change mostly amounted to darkening his underpants, but it was still a costume change and was given great fanfare, with alternate covers proliferating.
The Batman titles also expanded in this period. The same month Batman got his new outfit, Azrael debuted. The title starred the character, introduced in Batman: Sword of Azrael, who had donned Batman's mantle during "Knightfall" only to be deposed, having gone somewhat mad, in "KnightsEnd." Though Azrael was of good quality, with Denny O'Neil on scripts and Barry Kitson on pencils, some fans cried foul that Nightwing had not been given his own book, an outrage that traced back to the launch of Robin and Catwoman during "Knightfall."
In mid-1995, another Batman ongoing debuted: the quarterly Batman Chronicles. An anthology featuring multiple stories, it would sometimes give room for somewhat alternate or marginal Batman stories that would not otherwise find a home. Two mini-series were also launched in 1995: Batman: Gotham Nights II (sequel, logically enough, to the Batman: Gotham Nights mini-series) and Psyba-Rats (featuring Robin).
This period was a time of quality, generally, on the regular Batman books. This is due in no small part to the memorable work of Kelly Jones, pencilling Batman. Jones had previously pencilled original hardcover Batman graphic novels (the first of which was Batman / Dracula: Red Rain), and his regular work on an ongoing series seemed a bit of a coup at the time.
