New Gotham Era, Part 2 (2001)
The second year of the New Gotham era began with a crossover between the various Batman titles, albeit one that would only last a month. Titled Officer Down, it saw James Gordon shot and Catwoman suspected. The Batman family solved the crime, but Gordon decided in the conclusion to retire. It was not only the first time the titles were united since No Man's Land, but the first major change to the Batman mythos since the restoration of Gotham. Moreover, it was a memorable story of high quality.
September saw the Batman titles united again, this time for a crossover across the entire DC Universe, organized around a six-issue mini-series entitled Joker: Last Laugh. The disappointing story saw the Joker developing a series that allowed him to "Joker-ize" the villains of the DC Universe, thus providing the impetus for many crossovers into other titles.
