"New Look" Era (1964-1986)
Batman logo For 1964's Detective Comics #327 -- the 300th issue of the title featuring Batman and exactly 25 years later by the cover date -- the title's new editor, Julius Schwartz, chose to modify Batman's costume and direction. While Batman's sales were sluggish, a new kind of hero was becoming popular: at DC, the Silver Age Flash, Green Lantern, and the Justice League of America had already been introduced, while Marvel had created refreshingly new heroes. Julius Schwartz -- the editor who had reigned over the recreation of Flash, Green Lantern, and the Justice League (but who was then editing Strange Adventures and Mystery in Space, two science fiction titles) -- was given the task of doing the same to Batman. His first issue was the anniversary issue, Detective Comics #327.
With that issue, Batman's "new look" debuted -- prominently featuring a yellow oval background for his black bat chest sigil. In addition, the Batmobile was redesigned as a sports car and the Batcave was updated. The title even got a new logo -- a real rarity in those days. Batman even briefly weilded a crook's gun in that issue, although this was an oddity that did not continue and Schwartz claimed that this was an oversight. Batman didn't become gritty again, but his foes did shift away from alien-types to street-types. The issue is today generally acknowledged as containing the first new Batman of American comics' Silver Age.
Schwartz wasn't done, though, with his changes to the Batman formula. In the following issue, Alfred the Butler was killed off. Schwartz claimed that this was done both for shock value and to dispel rumors of the trio's homosexuality, which had been inaugurated by Fredrich Wertham and which were still lingering in 1964. The function Alfred played was replaced with Dick Grayson's Aunt Harriet.
The comic series regained its popularity. TV producer William Dozier, apparently inspired by the revitalization of Batman and his villains following Schwartz's new approach, decided to initiate a Batman TV series. Because Alfred would be in the TV series, he would have to somehow return in the comic book. So the Outsider, a mysterious villain that had since been introduced, revealed himself to be Alfred in disguise. The TV series, although known for camp, springboarded the Batman comics to remarkably high sales. It premiered on 12 January 1966.
Note that Batman's Legends crossover issue is not in post-Crisis continuity, although the Legends crossover event was post-Crisis. At first this seems a paradox, but it is no more so than any story extending pre-Crisis continuity past the Crisis event. (Keep in mind that Superman's Legends crossover issues were post-Crisis but continued the continuity of pre-Crisis events such as the destruction of New Genesis.) The Batman characters at that time were clearly an extention of their pre-Crisis selves and not yet in their post-Crisis form, as inaugurated by Frank Miller's "Year One" storyline.
