The era after Frank Miller's departure and before his much-celebrated
return is not remembered with terrible fondness, whereas Miller's work has become, without
exaggeration, the stuff of legend. This is, certainly, an accurate assessment of the relative
quality. On the other hand, following Miller was a hard act. Most of this era featured capable,
if not excellent work, and there certainly were a number of nice touches along the way, even
beyond Miller's involvement in two issues during this time. This was the era in which David
Mazzucchelli, still drawing more conventionally than his more famous later work, began on the
title, to be inherited upon Miller's return. Moreover, there are certainly many writers worse
than Denny O'Neil, whose tenure on the title featured, along with some awkwardness and the
disappointingly lackluster love interest of Glorianna O'Breen, the suicide of Heather Glenn,
Daredevil's girlfriend from the Miller issues and before. This era was plagued, and occasionally benefited, by changing members of
the creative team. Following Frank Miller's departure as writer, Marvel offered a couple of
issues with fill-in writers before Denny O'Neil took over the writing chores with #194. The
full end of the Miller era, though not its legacy, came with the full departure of artist Klaus
Janson, a mainstay during the Miller era, in #198. Mike Carlin assisted O'Neil on the writing
for #202, and #203 was written entirely by Steven Grant; O'Neil returned with #204. #206 saw
artist David Mazzucchelli's first work on the title, at first as penciller. Though he did not
pencil #207, he returned with #208 and stayed for some time. #208 and #209 were written by
Arthur Byron Cover, with science fiction legend Harlan Ellison co-writing #208. O'Neil returned
with #210, co-written by artist David Mazzucchelli, then as full writer beginning with #211.
Starting with #214, Mazzucchelli began inking over his own pencils. He would, however,
take #218-219 off, however. #219 also saw Frank Miller return as writer for a fairly lackluster
issue (which we should remember as we judge O'Neil's work on the title). Both O'Neil and
Mazzucchelli returned with #220, but Mazzucchelli did not ink his own pencils in #222 and #223.
#223 had Jim Shooter co-write with O'Neil an issue which crossed over with Secret Wars II.
Jim Owsley stepped in as writer for the following issue, #224, with which Mazzucchelli had no
involvement. O'Neil and Mazzucchelli returned with #225, with Mazzucchelli pencilling as well
as inking. #226, the quite well-written final issue of this era, full of Milleresque narrative
flair, was co-written by Frank Miller with O'Neil and had Mazzucchelli pencils but not inks. Frank Miller would begin, with Mazzucchelli, a new -- though brief -- run
beginning with #227.
