It is an oddity of history that the Doom Patrol was created and published
almost simultaneously with Marvel's X-Men, given that both
featured teams of super-powered freaks or outcasts with an older leader in a wheelchair. It is a
tragedy of history that the X-Men became so phenomenally successful, while the Doom Patrol has
reached greater heights but languished in relative obscurity. Then again, the original X-Men
also went into reprints (Doom Patrol's reprints would last only three issues, whereas the X-Men
would continue reprints for years), and we can only speculate what would have happened had Chris
Clarement created "the New Doom Patrol" instead of "the New X-Men." In their original incarnation, the Doom Patrol was comprised of four
members.
The first was Niles Calder, known as the Chief, the team's ingenious, wheelchair-bound paraplegic
leader.
Cliff Steele was a racecar driver who suffered a horrendous accident, leaving his body destroyed
and allowing his brain to be transplanted into a powerful orange robotic body.
Larry Trainor was a test pilot who flew through radiation in the upper atmosphere and who gained
the ability to release Negative Man, a black energy being who could move at the speed of light
but whose departure from Trainor's body for over 60 seconds would cause both Trainor and Negative
Man to die; Trainor's radioactivity forced him, freakishly, to wrap himself in lead-lined
bandages.
Rita Farr, Elasti-Girl, was a Hollywood actress who breathed strange volcanic fumes while on
location in Africa, allowing her to grow and shrink.
