Annotations to The Elektra Saga

The Elektra Saga, originally published as a four-issue mini-series in 1984, then collected in a paperback in 1989, was an attempt to put the well-remembered Frank Miller Daredevil material concerning Elektra into a single, edited collection. And it was a nice one, with the Ben Day dots eliminated, the work recolorized and slightly modified to work by itself. At the time, a full reprinting of Miller's work would have been unpredecented for length and utterly unmarketable. In 2000 and 2001, this was not the case, and Marvel at last published Miller's work on Daredevil in a complete form, newly recolorized. As such, three versions of some of this material now exists: the original, the recolorized vision for the presently definitive Daredevil Visionaries volumes, and the version printed in The Elektra Saga -- now long out of print and mostly forgotten.
I have attempted to annotate The Elektra Saga for this reason. It is an important text, the first attempt to deal with Miller's work as a saga, however truncated by the requirements of graphic novels at the time. I have tried to catalogue the source of each sequence as well as any modifications that occur. Page numbers, in the left-hand column, are given according to the collected edition, though they should not be difficult to adjust to the original issues.

Book One: The Wall
This book is essentially Daredevil (first series) #168, minus the first three pages, reordered chronologically with the flashback sequences from an unknown source.

4-11 This sequence was originally pages 6-12 of Daredevil (first series) #168 (the first issue Miller scripted, which also featured Elektra's first appearance), where it served as a flashback. The version here takes up an extra page because of the insertion of the Elektra graphic across pages 4-5 and the expansion of the last tier on page 11, making the panels fall downward on the page -- a process that creates negative space not present in the original. This expansion was possible because the entire sequence was comprised of three-tier pages in which the tiers were of equal height. This shift, while seemingly enhancing the sequence's conclusion, necessarily changes the emphasis of page endings, all too apparent if one looks. Additionally, the two captions that begin the sequence are new and a little more at the top of that first panel was shown. They here read: "It begins with a sunny September afternoon...", followed by "It begins with a nineteen year old boy who has not yet found a use for his strange powers...". The original two captions read: "Unconscious, Daredevil loses the outside world. From within, remembered sounds and smells come forth...", followed by "It is a time before there is a Daredevil. There is only a nineteen-year-old boy who has not yet found a purpose for his strange powers -- Matt Murdock, freshman, studying pre-law at Columbia University...".

38-39 This sequence was originally pages 4-5 of Daredevil (first series) #168, occuring just prior to the flashback that was reformatted as the opening of The Elektra Saga. The first panel is slightly different. Here it begins with the caption "...Everything...", concluding the prior page's thought. This obscures what was originally the top line of Daredevil's word ballon, which read "End ... of the line, punk." The remainder of the dialogue is unchanged.

40-49 This sequence was originally pages 13-22 of Daredevil (first series) #168, occuring just after the flashback. This change has the effect of making us read Daredevil as seriously injured but not unconscious, as the opening caption of the flashback had originally stated. The content is, outside of coloration, the same. As Daredevil (first series) #168 concluded, so does Book One here.

51-96
Book Two: The Gantlet
This book is essentially a heavily edited form of Daredevil (first series) #174-176. Not only have other plots been removed but scenes which develop from the events shown but follow other characters.

51-53 This sequence was originally pages 1-3 of Daredevil (first series) #174. The only alteration is that the title bar over the first page, as well as a large caption reading "Prologue" in the sky over the cityscape of the first panel, has been removed.

54 This page is a heavily edited version of pages 6-7 of Daredevil (first series) #174, which provided more context to the attack by ninjas of Matt Murdock. The first panel on page 54 here is all that remains of page 6 of the original. An utterly new caption has been added: "Ten hours ago, her plane set down at New York's LaGuardia airport. Ten seconds ago, this man though he was safe, in his Manhattan brownstone." The remainder of the page is the remainder of page 7, once its first panel has been removed. An utterly new caption has been placed between what is here the first and second panels: "He is Matt Murdock--Daredevil. When he was a boy, he was blinded by a radioactive isotope that mutated his nerve centers, expanding the range of his remaining senses beyond belief." Similarly, an utterly new caption has been place into what is here the second panel: "In one way or another, he's been fighting ever since."

55-56 These two pages were originally pages 8-9 of Daredevil (first series) #174.

57-58 This sequence is a heavily edited version of pages 10-12 of Daredevil (first series) #174. The first panel on the first page originally carried the simple caption: "Later...". Here it carries two captions: "Morning and attourney Matt Murdock goes to work.", followed by "As do others...". This change serves to compensate for the removal of two half-pages featuring Matt Murdock talking with Foggy Nelson, which were set as tall panels under two wide panels, one at the top and one at the bottom, which each featured Elektra. This page layout may still be seen on page 58, which is unchanged but for coloring from the original (page 12).

59-62 These pages were originally pages 13-16 of Daredevil (first series) #174.

63-64 These two pages are a dramatically modified version of pages 17-18 of Daredevil (first series) #174. Page 63 here is utterly altered. In the original, it was full of Daredevil's thought balloons, seven in all: "There's a woman down there! Didn't get a chance to hear her voice, so I've no idea who she is. / Terrific. Now I've got two people to save! / It'll take total concentration -- to judge where they are by their heart-beats-- / --to guess the angle of their swordthrusts by the slightest dislocation of the air. / Behind me--! / Just like the old days before my radar fully developed... / relying on my senses... my fancy footwork...". Here, Elektra's observations of Daredevil are given in captions, five in all: "She sees him then, above her, so full of grace and confidence, so alive-- and against her will, despite the battle, her thoughts go back... / ... back to bright afternoons in a college gymnasium, where they trained and taught each other, where they danced together, as lovers and fellow warriors ... / ... though neither had yet found a war to fight ... / So little has changed about him, she thinks. How magnificent he is! / So little has changed she thinks -- and so much." Page 64 here is changed from page 18 in the original only in that Daredevil's concluding thought balloon has been removed from the first panel: "... and an economy sized portion of luck!"

65-66 These two pages were originally pages 19-20 of Daredevil (first series) #174. The only modification is that the "next issue" box has been removed from the bottom of the final page.

67-70 These pages are a modified version of pages 1-3 and 5-6 of Daredevil (first series) #175. The first panel here lacks over an inch of its original top, on which was written the title of the issue and over which originally sat the credits and title bar. The last panel on page 67 was thus the first on page 2 of the original, offered here due to the newfound space. Similarly, the bottom three panels on page 68 were at the top of page 3 in the original. The concluding panel, a tier in width, of the original page 3, which featured Daredevil in close-up after having climbed back up the building, has been eliminated to make room on the bottom half of page 69. The original page 4 was itself a slightly modified reprint of the last page of Daredevil (first series) #174, or page 66 here, and therefore excluded here. The bottom half of page 69, then, is the top half of page 5 in the original. The top half of page 70 here, similarly, was originally the bottom half of page 6 -- a rare instance where a modified page's beginning better serves as a break than in the original. The two panels that comprise the bottom of page 70 here were originally the first and last panel of page 6, with an ironic and rather memorable fight scene in between.

71-72 These pages were originally pages 7-8 of Daredevil (first series) #175.

73-75 These pages are a rather modified version of pages 9-11 and 14 of Daredevil (first series) #175. The top half or so of page 73 was originally the bottom half or so of page 9. The bottom half or so of page 73 was originally the top half or so of page 10. Similarly, the top two tiers of page 74 were originally the bottom half or so of page 10, while the bottom two tiers of page 74 were originally the top two tiers of page 11. The top two panels of page 75, which suddenly feature Daredevil, were the next two tiers on the original page 11, leaving a a two-panel tier of that original page that featured Foggy Nelson in court, here appropriately eliminated. Although the next panel on page 75 is quite similar to the one immediately preceding it, this panel and the two that immediately follow did not occur until the top half or so of page 14 in the original. The caption "Meanwhile ..." has been removed from the first panel, so similar to the one before, because the change of scene between the original pages is here utterly obliterated.

76-80 These pages were originally pages 12-13 and 15-17, in that order, of Daredevil (first series) #175.

81 This page comes from pages 19-20 of Daredevil (first series) #175. The top tier (comprised of three panels) was the bottom tier of page 19. The remainder of the page was originally the top two tiers of page 20, with the isolated close-up of Elektra's face placed directly to the right of the image in which she stands over Daredevil's unconscious body -- rather than centered below it as it is here.

82-87 These pages were originally pages 1-6 of Daredevil (first series) #176.

88 This page, complete with the black hunk's threat on white female virtue, was originally page 10 of Daredevil (first series) #176.

89 This page was originally page 12 of Daredevil (first series) #176.

90 This page borrows from pages 13-14 of Daredevil (first series) #176. All but the last panel is all but the last panel of page 13. Instead of Daredevil crashing in, Turk did. The panel with Daredevil crashing through the skylight followed as the second tier on page 14. He left after a brief talk, only for Heather to arrive as well. The humor is removed for the sake of brevity -- and the fact that The Elektra Saga tries to focus on Elektra, who was not present for the humor.

91 This page was originally page 15 of Daredevil (first series) #176.

92 This page borrows from pages 16-17 of Daredevil (first series) #176. All but the last panel was all but the last two panels of the original's page 16, while the last panel was the last panel on the original's page 17. Turk's arrival is never shown.

93-96 These pages were originally pages 18-21 of Daredevil (first series) #176.

Book Three: Last Hand
This book is essentially the first half or so of Daredevil (first series) #180 with portions of Daredevil (first series) #177-180 spliced into its earliest portions.

98-100 These pages were originally pages 21, 7, and 10, in that order, of Daredevil (first series) #177.

101-103 These pages were originally pages 1-3 of Daredevil (first series) #178.

104-105 These pages were originally pages 20-21 of Daredevil (first series) #178.

106-107 These two pages area a modified form of pages 3-4 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The captions that open page 106 are utterly different from those that open page 3 in the original, though their placement is quite similar. The caption in the last panel on page 107 was not present in the original, though two brief captions were in the preceding panel and a different one, as well as an image of Daredevil swinging (that worked with the captions and made a transition to the next page), were present in the original but have been removed here.

108-109 These two pages come from pages 1-3 of Daredevil (first series) #179. The top half of page 108, consisting of three tiers, was the bottom half of page 1. The bottom half of page 108 was the top half of page 2, while the top two tiers of page 109 were the bottom half of page 2. The last four tiers of page 109 were the top four tiers of page 3, followed only by a large single panel in the original.

110-118 These pages are modified versions of pages 13-21 of Daredevil (first series) #179. The first panel of page 110 has simply had the caption "Later ..." added to it, but is otherwise the first panel of page 13. The first panel of page 111 has had the caption "And so ..." replace Ben Urich's interior monologue caption, "I cab it to a Times Square diner." Pages 112-114, originally pages 15-17, have been stripped of their dialogue and captions. The first panel, showing Daredevil leaving Urich, originally had two word balloons: Daredevil said "Sit tight, Ben. I'll check it out." Urich replied "Sure. I'm no hero." The remainder of the pages featured Urich's interior monologue captions, rather good but too numerous to list here. Page 115-118 are essentially identical to pages 18-21 of the original issue.

119 The top two-thirds of this page is the top two thirds of page 22 of Daredevil (first series) #179. The bottom three panels, comprising a single tier, are, so far as I can discern, new to The Elektra Saga.

120-122 These pages were originally pages 4-6 of Daredevil (first series) #180.

123 This page is a modified version of page 6 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The three captions that begin the page here were absent in the original, which had two different captions in the same location.

124 This page was originally page 8 of Daredevil (first series) #180.

125 This page was originally page 11 of Daredevil (first series) #180.

126-130 These pages were originally pages 7-11 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The only substantial change is in the captions in the last panel of page 130 (formerly page 11). Originally an interior monologue focused on Daredevil, these captions are now an exterior description focused on narrative tension. Thus, "he" here was "I" in the original, and the last caption, here "The Waiting is over.", was originally "And what about you, Daredevil?"

131-132 These two pages were originally pages 21-22 of Daredevil (first series) #180. The "next issue" box has been removed from the bottom of page 132 (formerly page 22).

133-134 These two pages are slightly modified from pages 13-14 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The opening two captions were originally two slightly longer captions with much the same content, though more focused on Daredevil than Elektra. Other than than this, there are no substantive changes.

135 This page is a slighly modified version of page 17 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The captions are utterly changed to get away from Bullseye's internal monologue and to focus on Elektra.

136 This page was originally page 18 of Daredevil (first series) #181.

137 This page is a modified verion of page 19 of Daredevil (first series) #181. The captions in the bottom tier are entirely new. No captions were on this page in the original.

138 This page was originally page 20 of Daredevil (first series) #181.

139 This page is a modified version of page 21 of Daredevil (first series) #181. Though no captions are here, five captions of Bullseye's internal monologue were in the original.

Scenes Featuring Elektra in Miller's Daredevil that were Omitted from The Elektra Saga

Daredevil (first series) #169: page 13 and the first panel of page 14 Elektra, following her being saved by Daredevil, visits Matt's apartment, finds a gift inscribed "To Matt -- All My Love -- Heather", throws it against the wall in sad jealousy, and then enscapes as Heather enters. This was probably omitted because Heather was marginalized in The Elektra Saga for space reasons. This scene would have occured shortly after the end of Book One, considerably prior to the opening of Book Two. The omission, which includes a silent panel of Elektra with her hand over her face, has the effect of making Elektra look tougher than she originally was.

Daredevil (first series) #180: pages 26-27 Foggy Nelson, accompanied by Matt Murdock, identifies Elektra's corpse in the morgue. Bullseye is present, impersonating the mortician. These pages would here have occured immediately after the end of Book Three.

Daredevil (first series) #180: page 37 Matt is shown mourning at Elektra's gravesite. This would have here occured between Book Three and Book Four.

Daredevil (first series) #181 Several scenes showing Matt's insanity have been cut or abridged, but the sequence in which we see Elektra's corpse appears in full.

The first panel, showing Daredevil leaving Urich, originally had two word balloons: Daredevil said "Sit tight, Ben. I'll check it out." Urich replied "Sure. I'm no hero." The remainder of the pages featured Urich's interior monologue captions, rather good but too numerous to list here. Page 115-118 are essentially identical to pages 18-21 of the original issue.

Scenes Featuring Elektra in Miller's Daredevil that were Omitted from The Elektra Saga
Daredevil (first series) #169: page 13 and the first panel of page 14	Elektra, following her being saved by Daredevil, visits Matt's apartment, finds a gift inscribed "To Matt -- All My Love -- Heather", throws it against the wall in sad jealousy, and then enscapes as Heather enters. This was probably omitted because Heather was marginalized in The Elektra Saga for space reasons. This scene would have occured shortly after the end of Book One, considerably prior to the opening of Book Two. The omission, which includes a silent panel of Elektra with her hand over her face, has the effect of making Elektra look tougher than she originally was.
Daredevil (first series) #180: pages 26-27	Foggy Nelson, accompanied by Matt Murdock, identifies Elektra's corpse in the morgue. Bullseye is present, impersonating the mortician. These pages would here have occured immediately after the end of Book Three.
Daredevil (first series) #180: page 37	Matt is shown mourning at Elektra's gravesite. This would have here occured between Book Three and Book Four.
