In 2002, DC's Vertigo imprint launched a new ongoing comic book, entitled
Fables and written by Bill Willingham, known to Vertigo readers as a writer of
Sandman-related projects.
The series had a delightful premise: that fairy tale characters were real and living in New
York City, exiled from their lands. In order to construct his community of these characters,
Willingham had to negotiate the large body of fairy tales, finding links between them,
conflating one charming prince with the next. The result was a magnificent endeavor with good
narrative results. And Fables was a success -- by the standards of Vertigo sales. When
Vertigo launched Y: The Last Man two months later,
people were proclaiming a new, albeit somewhat muted, Vertigo renaissance.
