Following the horrible surprise attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001, the comics industry reacted quickly -- not only with censhorship (as with
The Authority), but with charity volumes, the proceeds of which would go predominantly to those who lost family members. The first of these was Marvel's Heroes, a hasty magazine-size publication mostly featuring pin-ups. The creators involved, however, as well as the closeness to the event, made for a best-seller (with virtually all the money going to charity). Marvel followed this with A Moment of Silence, a comic book featuring three silent narrative tales that were far more successful artistically, though less successful in terms of sales.
DC, Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, and Chaos! Comics combined to produce two trade paperbacks of around 200 pages. DC would handle the second, slightly larger, volume, while the other publishers would handle the first. Both were published simultaneously.
