Michael Chabon's novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay told a tale of the two titular creators of the Escapist in the late 1930s and the early 1940s, the dawn of the Golden Age. They created the Escapist, the champion of a secret global brotherhood dedicated to freedom and called the League of the Golden Key. Possessing increased strength and agility, the Escapist's ancient training allowed him to escape almost any trap or prison. Kavalier and Clay also created Luna Moth, a mystic traveller with the powers of Lo, an ancient moth goddess.
In late 2003, Dark Horse Comics premiered Michael Chabon Presents... The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist, an 80-page quarterly comics anthology featuring the Escapist and his supporting cast. The stories were set in the style of past comic book eras and were told by a variety of creators, including Chabon himself -- who also served as creative guide for the series.
