Following the limited success of the 1998 limited series, the "Marvel
Knights" line launched a twelve-issue mini-series in 2000, concluding in 2001. Written by
Garth Ennis, the popular writer of violent
stories in
Preacher and elsewhere, with pencils by
Steve Dillon, Preacher's artist, the mini-series was a smash hit. It all but ignored
the previous mini-series, focusing on violence and humor -- instead of continuity. Following the smash hit of Ennis's twelve-issue mini-series, an ongoing
Punisher series was added to the Marvel Knights line. It began with six issues by the same
popular team (Ennis, Dillon, and Palmiotti) that had done the 12-issue limited series. Ennis
returned with issue #13 and remained on the title throughout the remainder of its run. Ennis wanted to change the tone of the series, moving it away from humor,
and so the series was cancelled, only to be relaunched immediately under Marvel's mature
readers MAX imprint. |
