In the wake of Rising Stars's popularity, Image's Top Cow launched Midnight Nation, a twelve-issue mini-series with pencils by the able Gary Frank. The mini-series began well enough but went far downhill, though not without some smart elements along the way. It focused on a policeman who enters the world of the in-betweeners, people invisible except to each other, the down-and-out of society. Learning that his soul was stolen, and assisted by the enigmatic Laurel, he begins the nearly year-long walk to New York City in an attempt to reclaim his stolen soul. Thus begins a series of episodic adventures along the course of this walk. At last arriving in New York City, the two descend into Hell, where David faces a melodramatic choice in which he may regain his soul at the cost of his freedom and of the life of Laurel -- revealed to be an angel, for the infantile few who have not already figured this out. He chooses instead to give his soul to Laurel, who he has fallen in love with -- a choice never made by any of the others who have been given this choice, a grand cliché that should remind us of nothing more than the end of Matrix Reloaded (which, pathetic though it was, did it better).

    0
Midnight Nation #1/2"Precious Objects" (a 12-page story); David and Laurel, walking, finding a place stocked with art that was never made and defending that place from a walker attack; Michael Zulli art; while placement here remains uncertain, this story should probably occur before David's changes begin (at #5's end, though #4 ends with a shot of the pair being watched by #5's walker who knows Laurel, and #3 ends in references to hope, this issue's theme); available through an offer in Wizard: The Comics Magazine; no cover data entered
    0
Midnight Nation #4"The Devil You Know"; some time after the previous issue, in the desert, David and Laurel encounter other in-betweeners who tell their stories and are afraid to cross over the nearby ridge, which leads to other such fearful camps, seemingly to infinity (clever in terms of theme though patently absurd)
    0
Midnight Nation #5"Past Present, Present Tense"; David and Laurel meet the last man whom she accompanied on his walk (which conveniently has never happenned before in all such walks she has taken), helping him help his lost family but leading to his death; ends with the revelation of David's altered chest
    0
Midnight Nation #6"Midway to Judgment"; in Chicago, David tries to communicate with his ex-wife Sarah, using his alteration to become semi-visible; the walkers kidnap her, however, and David has to rescue her with Laurel
    0
Midnight Nation #7"Decisions, Decisions, Decisions"; the walkers tell David their side of the story, while Laurel offers to kill him for the first of three times
    0
Midnight Nation #8"Somewhere between Nearly There and There"; after ten months of walking, with David freaking out more and more, he and Laurel battle a guantlet of walkers before he talks with his future self; the pair arrive in New York
    0
Midnight Nation #9"Explanations, Valid and Otherwise"; in New York, David and Laurel are kidnapped and taken into Hell, where David freaks out and seems to ready to kill Laurel
    0
Midnight Nation #10"Drifting Away"; David runs away but returns, finding Laurel crucified to a wheel and Satan holding his soul
    0
Midnight Nation #11"The Wheel"; David has to choose between being an enslaved walker with a soul or living without one while Laurel, revealed to be an angel without a soul, is reborn as a mortal with a soul; David chooses the latter (conveniently a first in all of history), inspiring the world, then wakes up on the street
    0
Midnight Nation #12"Beyond the Road"; in the hospital, David meets and reconciles with his ex-wife Sarah, becoming a cop again; years later and helped by Lazarus, David meets his younger self on the road and repeats the lies he once heard; David meets Laurel, reborn, and gets thanked
    0
Midnight Nationcollects Midnight Nation #1-12 and #1/2 with all covers (including variants and a couple unused covers); good J. Michael Straczynski afterword
