Elseworlds (1990-Present)
TV's Smallville In 2002, DC began publishing comics tying into the television show Smallville, then airing on the Warner Brothers (WB) network. Thanks largely to Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, the network had focused almost exclusively on teenagers, a particularly commercial demographic. Smallville was no exception, setting Superman's adventures during his teenage years in Smallville, where he would not wear a costume. The series had a rocky beginning, but garnered some critical attention. DC's first offering in the continuity of Smallville was a special offered in late 2002, but its success spawned a bimonthly series in 2003.
In 2004, DC offered an original Superman graphic novel through its Vertigo imprint -- a first. In actuality, however, it was an out-of-continuity tale of a comic book writer who is offered the job writing Superman but cannot decide whether to take it. It is a story of his consideration of the character in preparation to take over the title -- and simultaneously of his own childhood memories and anxieties over an inherited family disease. It is also autobiogrpahical, written by Steven T. Seagle, who did not want to write Superman when first offered -- though he did so throughout 2003.
