Julius Schwartz Era (1970-1986)
In late 1970, Mort Weisinger retired after some thirty years at DC. The various Superman titles Weisinger had prolifically edited were split between many replacements:

  • Julius Schwartz took over Superman and World's Finest;
  • Murray Boltinoff took over Action Comics, Superboy, and Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (with Jack Kirby soon picking up Jimmy Olsen as part of his Fourth World);
  • Mike Sekowsky took over Adventure Comics (featuring Supergirl); and
  • E. Nelson Bridwell got Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane.
American super-hero comics were being made more realistic in this era, and the new Superman titles were no exception. The more unrealistic elements were outright obliterated or, more often, ignored: these elements included imaginary stories, Kryptonite, and the perceived silliness of Mr. Mxyzptlk, the Bizarros, Lori Lemaris, Kandor, or Krypto -- as well as the frequent transformations Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen had experienced. It was a move not unlike the streamlined universe to emerge from Crisis on Infinite Earths a decade and a half later.
Jack Kirby's Jimmy Olsen #133 (cover-dated October 1970) introduced Morgan Edge, "president of the Galaxy Broadcasting System, new owners of The Daily Planet" -- a major change to the Superman mythos. The following issue, #134, introduced none other than the archetypal villain Darkseid. In later issues, Jimmy dealt with the Newsboy Legion, the Hairies, the Outsiders, and D.N.Aliens. Lois Lane, meanwhile, was caught in the middle of a gang war between the 100, Intergang, and the minions of Darkseid.
The biggest landmark of this new direction would be Superman #233 (cover-dated January 1971), Julius Schwartz's first issue as editor. Neal Adams's classic cover had Superman breaking chains around him, as if unleashing himself from his past, and the cover included the blurb "Kryptonite Nevermore!" -- advertising the radical change to the character. Indeed, even the title looked less like Superman #233 than the premiere issue of a new book entitled The Amazing New Adventurs of Superman: it was a bit of trickery, to be sure, but it ably communicated the title's new direction.
The interior kept up with the issue's billing. Denny O'Neil, brought in by Schwartz as the title's writer, was accompanied by previous penciller Curt Swan and new inker Murphy Anderson. It began unsuspectingly enough with an kryptonite-related experiment gone awry, knocking Superman unconscious into the desert sand. Awakening, Superman learned that the experiment had rendered all Kryptonite on Earth harmless. As if this were not enough, media mogul Morgan Edge -- Kent's new boss at the Planet -- then reassigns him away from the newspaper and to Edge's TV station, WGBS, where Kent becomes an on-air reporter. This created new complications for Kent's frequent departures to change into Superman.
The severity of the change to the title can be seen by the fact that the previous two issues had seen a two-part imaginary story featuring Killer Kent and Super-Luthor.
Later in the same issue, Superman flew over the spot of the earlier kryptonite-related experiment and his powers go awry; as he flies away, we see the form of Superman made out of sand, animate and arising from the Superman-shaped imprint the hero had made earlier in the sand. This sand-Superman with the capacity to drain Superman's powers would become the central figure of O'Neil's subsequent storyline. As Superman's powers were drained by the creature, he would be forced to derrive more clever methods of fighting crime and solving disasters. Meanwhile, the sandman would acquire Superman's personality as well, becoming a true alter ego (a sort of replacement for Bizarro, perhaps). Superman's waning powers led to public ridicule and Superman actually resenting the public and wishing to remain powerless. I Ching, the elderly Asian sage who O'Neil had previously used in Wonder Womanhis transformation of Wonder Woman, appeared throughout the second half of the storyline. Near the end of the storyline, we saw a Superman insane (though not evil) from a brain injury while powerless. The storyline concluded in #242 with the sandman, having acquired Superman's conscience, willingly going back to its home dimension -- and with Superman left considerably less powerful and more human than his past incarnations.
DC would then repudiate the reforms on the title, apparently because fans prefered more cosmic conflicts. #243 saw O'Neil replaced by Cary Bates, O'Neil's immediate successor on the title. The changed tone was immediately apparent: #243 opens in "deep galactic space" and has Superman quickly only briefly stunned by nothing short of a supernova. O'Neil would return, but never with his past glory.
Christopher Reeve from 1978's Superman movie 1978 saw Superman take to the cinema with the simply titled Superman, directed by Richard Donner and starring Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent / Superman, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. With the tagline "You will believe a man can fly!" the film sold Superman as science fiction, beginning with an unprecedentedly austere vision of Krypton. Reeve was perfect as the awkward Clark Kent and the confident Superman, restoring the love triangle that had been central to Superman's earliest comics appearances. Lois Lane's response to a god amongst humans was equally memorable. If Lex Luthor's incompetent minions chaffed audiences, it also made them laugh -- and pity the poor evil genius.
Terence Stamp as Zod in 1980's Superman II 1980's Superman II featured General Zod, Ursa, and Non -- three Kryptonian criminals newly escaped from the austerely envisioned Phantom Zone. With Terence Stamp as Zod, the criminals stole the film, killing astronauts on the moon and taking over the White House -- a move into politics that would be echoed in super-hero comics for decades.
1983 saw Superman III, a largely embarrasing film featuring Richard Pryor.
In 1986, with John Bryne set to take over the Superman titles and grant them a new continuity, Julius Schwartz was granted the chance to publish a farewell story, a goodbye to the characters and a denoument to almost fifty years of stories. Curt Swan, the most definitive Superman artist, was a shoe-in for penciller; George Perez and Kurt Schaffenberger were tapped as inker. Jerry Siegel was the first choice as writer, but legal difficulties prevented it. Alan Moore, then writing the groundbreaking Swamp Thing, reportedly told Schwartz, "If you let anybody but me write this, I'll kill you." The result, known as "the last Superman story" and published in Superman #423 and Action Comics #583, was nothing short of a tour de force, ending happily but mostly a somber deconstruction. Featuring just about every major character from the Superman mythos, the story nonetheless got at the heart of both these characters and of Superman himself. It is rightly remembered as a masterpiece.
Some material that should be included in this era is presently included in the previous one.
