Mike Carey Era (2002-Present)
Following Azzarello's departure on Hellblazer, Mike Carey -- who was writing Lucifer at the time, took over as writer with #175. Sales were not great across all of the Vertigo line, and #175 was of regular size despite being an anniversary issue -- one Hellblazer's parent title, Swamp Thing had never reached (although it had been cancelled at higher sales numbers than any Vertigo title was achieving in 2002). After two issues illustrated by Hellblazer veteran Steve Dillon, Azzarello's regular artist Marcelo Frusin returned to the title, becoming Carey's regular artist. Carey's run, while not horrific, was celebrated by many who had become disillusioned with Azzarello's writing, which was perceived as overly long, obtuse, and even often uninteresting (despite the sadomasochistic elements).
In early 2004, as Hellblazer was nearing #200, a new Swamp Thing series was launched. The first six issues were written by Andy Diggle, followed thereafter by Will Pfeifer.
