First Series (1972-1976)
Swamp Thing logo Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets (first series) #92.
More to come.
When looking at this information, you may wonder why Brother Power the Geek is included here. Brother Power the Geek, a quirky character, had his most significant appearance not in his quickly-cancelled two-issue series but in 1989's Swamp Thing Annual #5, scripted by Neil Gaiman. By 1989, almost no one remembered -- or cared to remember -- this late-'60s character, though the Gaiman-scripted story that returned him to attention (if not promenance) was published around the time Gaiman began The Sandman and was one of the very few tales that hinted at what Gaiman would have done with Swamp Thing if he had not decided, for ethical reasons, not to write the series. (That story was later reprinted in Neil Gaiman's Midnight Days. See below for more details on the era involved.) After the launch of Vertigo, when Vertigo was looking for subjects for its Vertigo Visions series of specials, Brother Power was blessed with a special entitled Vertigo Visions: The Geek #1. So, rest assured that Brother Power the Geek, though his inclusion before even the origin of Swamp Thing seems a non-sequiteur, was in time pulled into the greater Swamp Thing mythos.
