In 1980, star Marvel creators Marv Wolfman and George Pérez moved to DC
and revived the Teen Titans as New Teen Titans, mixing familiar characters with new ones
such as Cyborg and Raven. The series became DC's greatest hit, surpassed as an ongoing only by
Marvel's
Uncanny X-Men. With the series selling well, in 1982, DC offered a four-issue
mini-series titled Tales of the New Teen Titans. The individual issues focused on
Cyborg, Raven, Changeling, and Starfire. In terms of its focus on individual characters, this
mini-series paved the way for the later Teen Titans Spotlight, launched in 1986. In 1984, DC began experimenting with printing a few of its most
successful comics on better paper using a more advanced printing process. As part of this
project, each selected title would be relaunched with a new series on better paper while the
old title would continue, renamed and still printing new material. After about a year, the old
title would convert to printing reprints of the new, more expensive one, a process reminiscent
of the later reprinting of hardcovers as softcovers in the book trade. Thus, after issue #40,
New Teen Titans changed its name to Tales of the Teen Titans while a new
New Teen Titans series was launched on better paper. Tales of the Teen Titans
continued with new stories until #59, at which point it began reprinting -- first Wolfman's
debut and then the new, second New Teen Titans series.
