Ultimate Fantastic Four had been discussed for over a year before
it finally premiered. For a long time, Marvel had been talking with writer
Grant Morrison about creating the series,
but those talks finally fell through. Both Brian Michael Bendis, writer of
Ultimate Spider-Man,
and Mark Miller, writer of
Ultimate X-Men and
The Ultimates,
had put together proposals for the series. Joe Quesada, Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, thought that
he might be able to choose both, and suggested this to the creators, who agreed. The idea
would be to merge Mark Millar's bombastic stories with Brian Michael Bendis's dialogue. Bryan
Hitch, artist on
The Ultimates,
was brought in to design the team's costumes and look.
