Ultimate Spider-Man was the first title in a new line from Marvel
Comics, a line featuring slightly new takes on Marvel heroes, set in the present day but
introducing those characters for the first time. In the case of Spider-Man and X-Men, Marvel's
top-selling titles, the original conceptions of the characters were rooted in the fact that the
characters were teenagers, but those characters, while not aging remotely in real time, had
long ceased being teenagers. The Ultimate universe would show Spider-Man and others beginning
their careers as teenagers in the present day. As Bill Jemas, Marvel's President of Publishing
and New Media, put it,
Our characters have been around for almost 40 years. It's great that our comics are so rich that storylines run forever, but we want the Ultimate books to be accessible to the first-time reader. Someone will be able to pick up an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man and have enough information to understand and appreciate it. For Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel secured Brian Michael Bendis,
a popular writer known for Tarrantino-esque dialogue, as the series's writer. The series was a
stellar hit. A spin-off series was launched some six months later; entitled Ultimate Marvel
Team-Up and also written by Bendis, it would feature a different artist, and a different
Marvel hero for (Ultimate) Spider-Man to meet, for each story.
