Hot on the heels X-Men, the hit film, Marvel launched Ultimate
X-Men, a series featuring the X-Men as teenagers and set in the same universe as the
recently-launched Ultimate Spider-Man. Featuring writing by
Mark Millar, whose
long-obscured genius had late been revealed on
The Authority,
the new series was an immediate hit itself. Though two issues (#13-14) were scripted by Chuck
Austen, Mark Millar proved the dominant force on the title. His final storyline featured the
return of Magneto, the X-Men's arch-villain from the title's first storyline. With Mark Millar's departure from the title, scripting chores were given to
Brian Michael Bendis, the writer of
Ultimate Spider-Man,
who had been offered but had passed on the writing chores for the title when it was first
launched, feeling that he was not able to handle a team book.
