    Strange(r) Kiss(es) / Killings
Strange Kiss was a three-issue mini-series, published in black-and-white by Avatar Press, a coup for the small press. The very violent series was a hit and spurred a sequel three-issue mini-series, Stranger Kisses. Another sequel, Strange Killings, was published in 2002.

    City of Silence
City of Silence was a three-issue mini-series, published by Image Comics. Originally entitled Silencers, it was finished in the "early [']90's" and intended for publication by Epic Comics prior to Epic's demise (see From the Desk of Warren Ellis, Volume Two, page 66). Its success prompted Image to offer Ellis a sweet deal wherein Image would publish many mini-series by Ellis.

    Ministry of Space
Ministry of Space was a three-issue mini-series, published by Image Comics in 2001. It was an alternate history and a requiem for the British empire, or at least for British potency. Its crux point is that Nazi scientists were consciously smuggled into England instead of into United States and the Soviet Union -- and that the same individual who organized this brain-theft ran a British space organization that won the space race hands down.
Unfortunately, the third issue was delayed, apparently due to Warren Ellis not completing the script because of illness. Chris Weston became attached to other projects, most notably
Grant Morrison's The Filth, preventing him from completing Ellis's script when it was completed. Ellis relayed that Weston had promised to work on the third issue during the 13-issue Filth series, slowly completing the sole remaining issue. At present, the disposition of this third and final issue is unknown.

    Wildstorm Three-Issue Mini-Series
In 2002, Warren Ellis signed an exclusive agreement with DC Comics, allowing him to produce work for Wildstorm and its various imprints, which were kind to creators. Ellis had long championed short mini-series to exploit, in the fashion of the internet, the rapidity with which comics can reach fruition -- as opposed to, say, movies. Now, along with Global Frequency, Ellis was putting his money -- and his writing -- where his mouth was, producing a series of mini-series for Wildstorm's imprints that allowed creator ownership, Homage and Cliffhanger!
The first of these mini-series was Mek, published by Homage Comics. It premiered in November 2002, the month following the premiere of Global Frequency. It dealt with inner-city cults of mechanical enhancements ("mek"), including illegal and violent enhancements ("bad mek"). Reviews were mixed. Many saw Steve Rolston's pencils as too cartoony and the protagonist, Sarissa Leon, as less than compelling. The unexpected ending took many by surprise, however, but the series is not remembered as one of the best of Ellis's career.
Reload, the second three-issue mini-series, was published by Homage, beginning shortly after the conclusion of Mek. The three issues, featuring art by Paul Gulacy and Jimmy Palmiotti, were published bimonthly. They focused on a female assassin in a near-future America -- an assassin who went after the President and the men behind the throne.
Between Reload's second and third issues, the third three-issue mini-series was launched. Entitled Tokyo Storm Warning, the series was published by Wildstorm's Cliffhanger! imprint. Featuring art by James Raiz and Andrew Currie, it took place in an alternate timeline wherein Japanese monster movies really happened, battled by mechs -- by human-operated battle suits. Its protagonist was an American woman who used one of the technological suits used by Japan to battle these monsters. While not initially compelling because of its generic absurdity, the series concluded in a manner that justified exactly that in a clever way.
Red, the fourth three-issue mini-series, was launched in the middle of Tokyo Storm Warning. Featuring art by Cully Hamner, Red was published by Homage Comics. The series focused on a retired C.I.A. assassin who the new head of the C.I.A. tries to erase -- and who subsequently goes after his former masters.
The same day Tokyo Storm Warning concluded, Two-Step was launched through the Cliffhanger! imprint. The series featured art by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti.

    Orbiter
Orbiter was an original graphic novella, published by Vertigo, written by Warren Ellis, and illustrated by Colleen Doran. It told the story of the return of the Venture, the last space shuttle sent into space -- the disappearance of which caused the end of manned space flight. The shuttle returns altered, however, and with a single insane crew member. Thus starts the investigation of its disappearance and, ultimately, of mankind's destiny -- to get out into space.
Not long after Orbiter was solicited, the space shuttle Columbia burned up upon re-entry. This space shuttle tragedy had uncomfortable resonances with the text, in which Venture lands in flames on people who have camped out at Kennedy Space Center. Ellis and Doran had worked with NASA people to create the graphic novella, were both believers in the space program, and were deeply affected by the tragedy. But, whereas DC had censored The Authority in the wake of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks upon the United States, no such censorship would be forthcoming here: as an original hardcover graphic novel with creator ownership, it seemed that different rules applied. And, as Ellis pointed out, the point of the plot was that we had to get back into space following a tragedy.
