Joss Whedon Era (2004-Present)
May 2004 saw the X-Men franchise receive a new direction -- entitled X-Men: Reload -- following Grant Morrison's departure. The month saw the debut of no less than four new titles:

  • Astonishing X-Men (second series) -- the new flagship title, scripted by Joss Whedon (famous for scripting the Buffy, the Vampire Slayer TV show) and illustrated by celebrated artist John Cassaday (of Planetary fame);
  • a new Excalibur series, scripted by Chris Claremont and following Xavier, now in the ruins of Genosha;
  • District X, a Marvel Knights title focusing on Bishop; and
  • New X-Men (second series) -- a second-tier title by unknown creators, given the title of the former flagship book (the name of which changed in the same month).
The following titles continued with dramatic new directions:
  • Uncanny X-Men, now scripted by Chris Claremont (and essentially a continuation of his X-Treme X-Men, cancelled to make room for X-Men: Reload);
  • New X-Men (first series) became X-Men (second series), as it had been titled before Morrison took over, and would not be scripted by Chuck Austen (ousted from Uncanny to make room for Claremont);
  • Mystique, given a new creative team; and
  • Exiles, given a new creative team.
And the following titles continues, basically as usual:
  • Wolverine,
  • Emma Frost,
  • Weapon X,
  • Cable / Deadpool, and
  • Alpha Flight.
Two months later, ongoing Rogue and Starjammers series were launched. A month after that, with X-Statix concluding, a new X-Force ongoing was launched. A month after that,
I am waiting to add the following, based on the series' continuation:
  • Exiles (past #45),
  • X-Treme X-Men (past #44),
  • Emma Frost (past #12),
  • New Mutants (past #12), and
  • NYX (past #6).
